The 2014 RadioActivity of MAARC meetings this year was held in Timonium, MD from June 26th to 28th. Take a look at MAARC site to get more information about this great annual event. I bought some interesting radio sets, some of them restored, other in original conditions, and one as a Lazarus. Two Zenith transoceanic models 8G005BTZ1 and A600, three Crosley models V, Fiver De Luxe, and 182 Travette Moderne, one Philco PT25, one Airline 04R508A, and a Bendix 110. All are from the flea market but the Crosley V that I had a wining bid at the main auction.

This set was bought in the flea market of the MAARC RadioFallFest of 2012. It is a Canadian Farm Set that works with a 1.4v or 2v A battery for the filament and two 45v B batteries, 90v for the plate. If using a 2v battery, a 2.2 ohm resistor must be used as well. Yet, the 1.4v battery does not need any resistor. Apparently, the cabinet was in a fair condition, only with lots of scratches on the white paint, missing both knobs, non original dial pointer, original back in place, and no cracks. Chassis was pretty clean and conserved, only with a layer of dust. All tubes tested good. Also the electrolytic cap and all resistors were within their original specification, and were not replaced. All other caps were replaced by stuffing new ones inside the case of the old ones. The radio worked as new, with a good and mellow sound. 

For the cabinet, I used a white color automotive gloss enamel by rust-oleum. The dial pointer was reproduced by molding and casting, using as a model the one from my Northern Electric 5000. The products used were the Amazing Mold Rubber and Amazing Casting Resin all from Alumilite at http://www.alumilite.net . This set had its restoration finished over this Memorial Day weekend. This set was in a worse condition than the Zenith 705, which restoration process is described in the last post of previous week. Take a look at the photos above and below. The radio was in a Lazarus condition. Lots of woodworking on the cabinet that was completely falling apart. It was necessary to make a reproduction of the cabinet floor. The front and lateral veneers were loose, with some of them missing. All cabinet parts needed to be glued back together including new veneers on the missing spots.  The top of the cabinet was completely warped and loose. The the top and the botton layers were then removed and glued back with lots of pressure. The front trim was missing and the lateral ones were cracked, then I decided to make new ones using a router table. Also all 4 knobs were missing and I replaced them with reproductions from Renovated Radios - http://www.renovatedradios.com/parts.html.

It was a very nice restoration project. The radio was in a really bad condition, as you can see in the photo below. Lots of woodworking on the cabinet that was completely falling apart. It was necessary to make reproductions of the botton and the back and glue every cabinet part back together. The inlay was broken and was replaced by a new one, of the same design, sold by Woodcraft under Inlay Border #015 1/4" 2 pcs #149615. Then the old cabinet finish was stripped with a citrus base remover, sanded with 220, 320 grid sand paper, and 0000 steel wool, and refinished with one layer of toner and about 6 layers of satin lacquer by Mohawk.

I just got a Northern Electric model 5000 made in Canada. I like these Baby Champ series, the radios are very reliable with a good sound.
